Rachel Carson, Environmentalist and Role Model

By Elizabeth Barclay

I was assigned a school project to create a wax museum display about a female role model.  I selected Rachel Carson.  Ms. Carson was a Marine Scientist who advocated against the use of pesticides such as DDT because of their harmful effect on animal and plant life and the impact on the ecosystem.

I selected Rachel Carson because she was a pioneer in the battle against harmful chemicals in our environment.  Without Ms. Carson’s groundbreaking efforts, the animal and plant life of our world would be greatly harmed.  Ms. Carson was born in 1907 and died in 1964; she wrote books about nature and how to keep it healthy.  She attributes her writing career to a fourth grade school assignment; she wrote a story based on her brother’s experiences in combat during World War I.

I consider Ms. Carson to be a role model because she helped the environment in a big way and shared her passion through written language and I plan to be a teacher and hope to encourage students to share their hopes, dreams and passions through the written language.
