Wind Turbines

By Levi Walden

When Dad came to pick me up from Papa’s, Dad, Papa, Charlie and I went to the barn to build the Wind Turbine Project.  All of the fourth graders at Happy Elementary were building a working Wind Turbine to demonstrate what we learned during a Science Unit on energy.

We decided to use a piece of PVC pipe.  I cut the pipe into smaller pieces.  Next, we added a t-shaped connector and then we glued a curved one onto that.  I drilled a hole in the PVC pipe a put a screw through it.  Next I added a bolt, a washer.  I put an old fan blade on the bolt and screwed it on.  I mixed a bucket of concrete and put the pipe in it to hold up the wind turbine.

My turbine turned in the wind and I learned how others built their turbines using paper and adding electricity.  I enjoyed the opportunity to work with my family and to learn how electricity is generated for my community.
