Making Math Automatic

The Happy Second Grade class and their teacher, Joli Johnson, received a grant for the Reflex Math System.  The Reflex system combines research-proven methods and innovative technology to provide the most effective math fact fluency solution available.

The system is based on a fact family approach that builds on and reinforces important mathematical concepts such as the commutative property and the relationship between the operations.  When students understand the conceptual connections between facts, their progress to automaticity is accelerated.  A few of the factors behind Reflex’s success:

  1. Reflex is highly adaptive and individualized so that students of all ability levels have early and ongoing success.  In addition, the system consistently rewards students for both their effort and progress toward automaticity.  They come to understand that if they are willing to put in the work, they really can succeed in math.
  2. Reflex fluency development games are different.  Unlike typical math fact games, they require students to engage in increasingly complex and fast-paced decision making.  Once students have developed the ability to fluently answer math facts while simultaneously achieving game objectives, they will be able to do the same while learning new math concepts and procedures in the classroom.

Daven, a Happy Elementary second grader, said, “I really like Reflex math because if you take too long with a fact, the game is over.  I know I am getting better by my score and I get harder problems.”

Lynn is a second grade student who uses Reflex math.  She said, “It is really fun.  When I first started, the math fact games but I am getting better.  I know I am better because I go further in the games than I used to.”

“Reflex math is fun math.  I am working on pluses and minuses and I am up to big numbers like 30 – 12.  It helps me do hard questions quickly.  I am better at my facts than I was when we started,” said Emily, a second grader.

Happy Elementary is continually looking for ways to increase the rigor and the pace of learning so the students can be competitive in the global arena.  Happy Elementary is excited to have the opportunity to use Reflex Math to build automaticity with math facts.
