Five Happy Elementary First grade students met the Principal Reading Challenge for January.  All first graders were encouraged and challenged to meet the reading goal set forth by their teacher, Mrs. McNeill, and go beyond that.  The long term goal is for students at Happy Elementary to be fluent readers who enjoy the printed word.  The five students who met the challenge were rewarded with a trip to Schlotsky’s in Canyon where they enjoyed pizza and Cinnabons.  All of the students said they planned to continue reading and meet future reading challenges.  The students are also honored with a photo in the Challenge Castle in the Happy Elementary main hallway.

The challenge for first grade students was designed to build confidence among emerging readers.  The students typically read their books multiple times before taking a comprehension quiz.  To meet the challenge, students needed to read for understanding the first time through a text, reducing the number of times a text needs to be read.  Mrs. Waldo, Happy Elementary Principal, expects all first graders to be reading above the first grade level by the end of the first grade year.  Reading fluency and reading comprehension are keys to future academic success.

Great things are happening at Happy Elementary!
