Chapter Challenge

By Toni Waldo

Second grade students received a principal challenge to read chapter books.  The challenge was designed to encourage emerging readers to select books that cannot be finished in one setting, to follow a more complex story line, and gain independence in gaining information and knowledge.  Nine second grade students at Happy Elementary School met the challenge and were rewarded with a pizza party in the superintendents’ office.  The students ate pizza and cake, made reindeer food and played Uno Attack.  The students also shared with Mr. Wesley, Happy ISD Superintendent, about the wonderful Magic Treehouse Chapter book series.  Mr. Wesley commented on how proud he was of the students to read chapter books and to be excited about the books they are reading.

Chapter books are scary for some young readers; however, they provide complex narrative forms, richer language, complex sentence structure, intense plot development, and they train children to read for sustained periods of time.  As a principal, I will continue to challenge students to read a variety of different genres, opening their world to the works of others.
